I had to read this book for my MBA program. It has nothing to do with stepmomhood, but everything to do with changing yourself to get what you want out of life. I think a lot of it can be applied to the stepfamily situation.

Section 1 - Private Victory
Habit 1 - Be Proactive
Habit 2 - Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3 - Put First Things First

I think Section 1 has some great advice that would be beneficial to smoms. Here are couple of the ideas I think relevant. Circle of Concern vs. Circle of Influence is the idea that you should focus your energy & efforts on things you can actually affect. When making day to day decisions keep the overall goals in mind, let little things go and focus on the big ideas that will get you to where you want to be at the end of it all.

Section 2 - Public Victory
Habit 4 - Think Win/Win
Habit 5 - Seek First to Undertand, Then to Be Understood
Habit 6 - Synergy

If you have the type of relationship with BM to put Section 2 in place, then you're lucky. This section is about all parties working together to create effective solutions for everybody. I doubt a lot of our BMs would be cooperative. Plus personally, I think Habit 6 is wishful thinking in just about any situation.

Section 3 - Renewal
Habit 7 - Sharpen the Saw

This basically means take care of yourself in every aspect. I think this is the most important chapter we can apply to ourselves as smoms. If we run ourselves into the ground, then we are no longer capable of taking care of our family if we want to or not.
Love Steven Covey...very good advice
